Shaped like a shell, it has very little surf and is sheltered thanks to its orientation, where the green flag always flies. It's highly recommended for children , who also have permanent play facilities right on the sand—a complete beach playground.
Its waters are especially ideal for water sports . In Poniente, you can take sailing courses or rent a sailboat, go kayaking, or scuba dive. Its inland sea is also exceptional for windsurfing enthusiasts , as this port area, perfectly oriented to the northwest, offers excellent wind conditions. And for those who want to spend some time pedaling , there are plenty of these boats available for rent right on the beach.
Poniente Beach: the most accessible beach in Spain
Summer 2015 will bring a change to this beach, as it will become fully accessible with the opening of the multi-service building for people with disabilities. This 80-square-meter facility, located next to Talasoponiente, will have adapted restrooms, showers, lockers, a library, and, most importantly, one of the features that will make Poniente Beach the most accessible in Spain: a wheelchair hoist that facilitates basic activities for wheelchair users.
There are also audio guides for people with vision problems: some wristbands that indicate to the swimmer how far it is from the shore, the depth of the water and ensures a quiet bath since they have a button to press if they are found wrong.
Several walkways allow direct access to the water without stepping on the sand, although this wooden mat will not be fixed all year round due to the tides and winter storms. There are also several pergolas for those allergic to the sun.
Sport and fun
Poniente is, above all, a dynamic, fun and sporty beach , not only because of its good conditions for sailing or children's play, but because its urban profile in the heart of Gijón, surrounded by a wide promenade , open squares, modern avant-garde buildings and a bike lane, makes it a popular spot for skating, cycling and jogging, in addition to numerous benches that attract many walkers to rest and two more children's areas with swings and attractions, plus the proximity, just 200 meters from the beach, at the end of the promenade, of the Gijón Aquarium, one of the most cited attractions of the city of Gijón.
Poniente is also home to numerous sporting initiatives , and its sand is frequently used by beach volleyball teams , competing daily on nets set up right on the sand. The beach, with its excellent conditions for this sport, is one of the venues for the national beach volleyball championship. It also hosts a popular open water swim every year , attracting many amateur and professional swimmers, all vying to be the first to reach Arbeyal beach, about two kilometers from Poniente.

Its surroundings are also a frequent venue for cultural events, especially during the summer months. Concerts and musical marathons take place on summer nights.
Busy and popular, this reconstructed space for public leisure is part of an ambitious project to rehabilitate a vast coastal promenade in Gijón. This promenade begins at Campa de Torres , located at the westernmost point of the municipality, and then continues along the regenerated beaches of Arbeyal, in the La Calzada neighborhood, where the Riera and Marítima del Musel shipyards once stood, and along Poniente Beach itself, located in the area occupied by the Cantábrico Shipyards, in the Natahoyo neighborhood. From Poniente Beach, the promenade continues along San Lorenzo Beach , Rinconín Park, the Cervigón Coastal Path , Cabo de San Lorenzo Park, and the East Coast Trail to the eastern boundary of the municipality at La Ñora Beach. It is a promenade of unique dimensions and beauty on the Cantabrian coast.

Information:
The beach of Poniente has showers and toilets, bins, containers, parking, public address system, access for the disabled and daily sand cleaning. First aid and rescue boat services, in addition to marking in the bathing areas, and shuttle / launching channels for boats.
The western area has a very good access given its location in the city, perfectly communicated with inter-urban and regional transport, given that the train and bus stations of Gijón are very close.
