More than 30 years ago since what we called "Rural Tourism" began in Asturias, the first hotels and rural houses opened in areas little known to the public. In this journey, the model has been changing and today there are travelers who are looking for another way to enjoy nature, the landscape and also the landscape, with a responsible attitude towards the environment. We propose here some initiatives that offer "ecotourism" within the Principality of Asturias.

Ecological tourism or the also called ecotourism It is an alternative tourism, different from what we can call traditional tourism.

The International Ecotourism Society (TIES) defines ecotourism as "responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people."

    • Contributes to the conservation of biodiversity.
    • It supports the welfare of the local population.
    • It includes a learning / interpretation experience.
    • Involves responsible action by tourists and the tourism industry.
    • It is offered primarily to small groups by small businesses.
    • It requires the lowest possible consumption of resources and the use of renewable energy sources, biomass, solar energy, wind energy ...
    • Emphasizes local participation, ownership and business opportunity for the rural population.

Ruta del Quesu and Cider

Years ago, two brothers, Manuel and Javier, started their ecotourism initiative, without knowing what that really was. They decided to stay in their mountain town, Asiegu, in the municipality of Cabrales, and make the travelers who come there participate in the rural ways of life showing the hallmarks of this territory.

The "rural itinerary" begins at eleven in the morning or seven in the afternoon. First visit a modern cheese factory to find out how an artisan Cabrales cheese is made. Then the explanations about the territory and how to build the farmhouses, pastures, pumaradas, the Cabrales cheese maturation cave and finally the espicha, which does not lack the cheese board, Cabrales mayau, hard-boiled eggs, corn cakes, cider sausages, hash with potatoes, cod omelette, potato omelette, honey and cider.

Ecotourism in Onís

Onís is part of the Picos de Europa, the highest peaks in Asturias, some extraordinary limestone mountains that the Marquis of Villaviciosa managed to have declared as the first National Park. Onís belongs to the so-called western massif or El Cornión, crowned by the Torre Santa de Castilla (2.596 m). At a certain height the forests no longer develop and dominates the mountain grassland landscape, used by cattle during the summer. In these slightly flatter areas, the shepherds of Onís have located their sheepfolds since time immemorial, with stone and tile cabins, where they make the Gamonéu cheese from the port, with cow, sheep and goat milk.

All this makes up a 100% recommended space to enjoy nature, combined with its conservation and for the benefit of the local community.

Sleep in rural accommodation

When we like to enjoy our vacations in a way attached to nature, in rural environment and with respect for the environment we have many options in Asturias. We have a wide variety of accommodation in rural areas, well connected but with that extra peace and quiet that our mountains provide.
