Tineo, the main town in the western interior of Asturias, head of a large and diverse council, has been for centuries a place of passage, trade, hospitality and influence.
Its population was consolidated during the time of Alfonso IX, when it was decisively incorporated into the primitive pilgrimage route which connects Oviedo with Santiago de Compostela. This was no small detail: during the 12th to 15th centuries, the town's influence was so significant that a large part of southwestern Asturias came to be known as the Asturias of Tineo, being one of the first Asturian towns with a true urban aspiration.
What to see in the town of Tineo
Set on a hillside, Tineo corresponds to the type of itinerary villageBorn along the road and shaped by the passage of travelers, merchants, and pilgrims, the town's urban layout is divided into two traditional neighborhoods. Villa Funds y The Peak or CimadevillaBoth have a more popular and rural feel, where granaries, bread baskets, stables, haylofts and other auxiliary buildings still exist, reminding us that the town never turned its back on the countryside.
These two neighborhoods are linked by a central area where many of their main buildings are concentrated, and where Tineo best demonstrates its character as historic villageCombining 19th-century buildings with pieces of remarkable heritage value, its historic center has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest. Within this ensemble, the monuments to two prominent figures in its history also shine brightly: Pedro Rodríguez de Campomanes (first Count of Campomanes), a great representative of the Spanish Enlightenment of the 18th century, and José Maldonado González, a politician from Tineo who presided over the republican legality in exile until its dissolution during the Transition.
We begin our visit to this town in the historic center. The Town Hall Square It is dominated by the town hall, which comes from an old barn adapted for municipal use. Very close by are two essential parts of the noble hamlet: the Palace of the García de Tineo -or of the Maldonado family-, one of the few examples of Gothic civil architecture in Asturias, and the Meras PalaceBuilt in 1525 and cited with admiration by Jovellanos. Very close by, the St. Peter's Church It occupies the place where the old one stood. convent of San Francisco and it is one of the most historic spaces in the town.

Although an old legend links the founding of the convent to Saint Francis's journey to Compostela, the most solid hypotheses connect it to the Knights Templar, and it wasn't until the 13th century that it came under the rule of the Franciscans. The church preserves Romanesque and transitional Gothic elements, and within its grounds is also found the Museum of Sacred Artwhose collection brings together wooden carvings from the medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods, as well as pieces of goldsmithing, liturgical ornaments, sacred vestments and an interesting collection of old books, with copies dating back to 1522.
Then it's a good idea to approach the Friars' Promenade and San Roque FieldThese two spaces perfectly encapsulate Tineo's relationship with the Camino de Santiago and its landscape. The promenade, through which pilgrims entered the town, is also one of the most beautiful stretches of the route: a hillside path shaded by centuries-old trees and offering some of the best views in Tineo. It is home to the Pilgrim's Sundial, with the inscription “Viator horam aspice et abi viam tuam” (“Traveler, look at the time and continue on your way”). Nearby stands the Chapel of San RoqueBuilt in the 14th century next to the Camino and linked to devotion to the patron saint of pilgrims and plague victims. Beside it springs the Fountain of the Muses and it opens San Roque Field, under whose grove Tineo celebrates its main festival every August 15th.

Monastery of Santa María la Real de Obona
If the town is the civic center of Tineo, Obona is one of its great spiritual and historical cornerstones. The monastery has maintained its connection with the Primitive Way since the Early Middle Ages, and it was Alfonso IX who decisively reinforced its role by making it a mandatory stop for pilgrims.

Tuña, Exemplary Town and stately village
Tuña was recognized as an Exemplary Village of Asturias in 2000, and it's easy to see why: stately homes, palaces, granaries, and farmhouses. Rafael del Riego, a key figure in Spanish constitutionalism, was born there, and in its surroundings we find two of the municipality's greatest attractions: the Fana de Genestaza and the route to the Merillés dolmen.
Navelgas and gold
Navelgas, an Exemplary Village since 2003, is one of the most comprehensive destinations in the municipality, combining landscape, ethnography, and a unique mining history. There you'll find the Gold Museum of Asturias, dedicated to the value of the metal and the centuries-long struggle to extract it from the earth. The Gold Trail begins in the village, allowing visitors to explore ancient Roman mines, canals, and washing facilities.

Dolmen of Merillés, a prehistory in the heights
In the Merillés mountain range stands one of the most beautiful megalithic monuments in Asturias. It preserves four orthostats and a large capstone, and can be reached via the PR AS-256 trail from either Tuña or Merillés. It's a highly recommended hike, combining the pleasure of a good walk with the feeling of being in the presence of something remote and solitary.
Esva River Gorges
In the north of the municipality lies one of the most valuable ecological enclaves in western Asturias. The gorges are protected, preserving alder groves and riparian forests of great interest, and the Esva basin is home to the largest otter population in Asturias.

Fana de Genestaza, living geology

Naraval and the Vaqueiro world
To fully understand Tineo, one must delve into the culture of the transhumant herders, so closely linked to central western Asturias. In Naraval one finds the Vaqueiro Museum of Asturias, designed to recreate the life, customs and origin of this social group.
The Primitive Way to Santiago
The route crosses the town, passes through San Roque, and leaves behind churches, old inns, place names, and a form of hospitality that has shaped the local economy for centuries. For today's traveler, exploring even a short stretch around the capital is an excellent way to connect heritage and landscape.
Valentín's Oak
This oak tree, declared a Natural Monument in 1995 and awarded the title of "Giant Tree 2008," measures approximately 16 meters in height, has a crown of 20 meters, and a trunk with a circumference of almost 10 meters, a testament to its great age. It is believed to be one of the oldest trees in Asturias, as it is mentioned in documents predating the discovery of America.
Calendar of Festivals and Events in the Tineo Council

A multi-sector event with nearly 200 participating companies and 15.000 square meters of exhibition space; in addition to a parallel program with gastronomy, music and activities for all audiences.
The beginning of summer It adds two very different, but very Tineo-related, events. On the one hand, a biennial event is held AsturforestaA leading forestry event in southern Europe and a meeting point for the forestry sector, where technical advances and the national and international market situation will be presented. Meanwhile, the Vaqueiro territory is gaining prominence with the Vaqueirada FestivalThe festival in Aristébano, held on the last Sunday of July, has been declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest.
