The Association of the Most Beautiful Villages of Spain was founded the 1 of October of 2011. The first 14 towns that are part of the most beautiful villages network in Spain are presented at FITUR (Madrid) by the 31 of January of 2013.
He was born with a Common objective: jointly promote all the localities that are part of the association and that they have a clear cultural and natural interest. These localities are municipalities of less than 15.000 inhabitants that have heritage listed as a cultural, natural or artistic interest.
Thus, the municipalities that started the journey are, by provinces:
Andalusia: Mojácar, Pampaneira, Lucainena de las Torres, Vejer de la Frontera and Frigiliana.
Aragon: Valderrobres, Albarracín, Calaceite, Puertomingalvo, Rubielos de Mora, Cantavieja, Aínsa, Anento, Alquézar and Ansó.
Castilla y Leon: Maderuelo, Medinaceli, Ayllón, Pedraza, Urueña, Frías, La Alberca, Mogarraz and Candelario.
Castilla la Mancha: Valverde de los Arroyos, Alcalá de Júcar and Almagro,
Cantabria: Santillana del Mar and Bárcena Mayor.
Valencian Community: Peñíscola, Morella, El Castell de Guadalest and Vilafamés.
Canary Islands: Tejeda

To these 35 initial municipalities this 2016 has added nine more locations: Liérganes (Cantabria), Laguardia (Álava), Zuheros (Córdoba), Ciudad Rodrigo (Salamanca), Sepúlveda (Segovia), Peñalva de Santiago (León), SOS del Rey Católico (Zaragoza), Trujillo (Cáceres) and Torazo (Asturias) ).
Starting this year, the October 1 will become the Day of the most beautiful villages in Spain and there will be a day of open doors in all of them, where tickets to museums and other tourist attractions will be free.
