The Black Week of Gijón is located in the on the grounds of L'ArbeyalThe festival, which began in 1988, reaffirms its status as a major literary, cultural, and popular event, with a program that will combine crime fiction, comics, critical thinking, exhibitions, festive activities, and new proposals that will be announced leading up to its start.
One of the main new features of this edition will be the creation of the Domingo Villar-Semana Negra AwardThe award, intended to recognize the career of authors of the Spanish-language crime fiction genre, will be presented to its first recipient, Lorenzo Silva, whose work has decisively contributed to the consolidation of the genre in Spain. The jury particularly highlighted his creation of such recognizable characters as Bevilacqua and Chamorro, who have become icons of contemporary narrative.
This year's poster is the work of Chilean illustrator Félix Vega Encina, a leading figure in Latin American comics, known for his work that blends fantasy and historical memory. Comics will also take center stage with the exhibition "Working is Tiring," dedicated to issues such as job insecurity, unionism, unpaid work, occupational health, and workplace accidents. The exhibition will feature works by artists such as Alfonso López, Miguelanxo Prado, Ángel de la Calle, Elías Tañó, and Elena Mistrello.
The program will be rounded out with presentations of graphic novels, projects related to anarchism, the Spanish Transition, and the Argentine dictatorship, live artistic performances, and photographic exhibitions such as Victoria Iglesias's. Also planned is presence of international authors such as Elmer Mendoza and Barbara Baraldi, along with numerous names in Spanish crime fiction and tributes to figures such as Rambal and Xuan Bello.
The nights of the XXXIX: musical memory of Gijón
From July 4th to 10th, the 39th Gijón Noir Week will dedicate its evenings to music, conversation, and documentary film. Seven nights to explore the city's sonic history, from the most politically charged rock to the Xixón Sound, legendary venues, and the new voices of the Gijón scene.
Saturday, July 4 — Always Illegal
A tribute to Jorge Martínez and Ilegales, one of the most unique and influential bands in Spanish rock. The event will feature Los Ruidos and a screening of the documentary Ilegales 82, directed by Juan Moya.
Sunday, July 5 — Xixón Sound
A look at the movement that put Gijón on the map of Spanish independent music. Through music, conversation, and the documentary "Generación Xixón Sound" by Aure Roces, the event will revisit a scene that spawned bands like Australian Blonde, Manta Ray, Nosoträsh, Doctor Explosion, and Penélope Trip.
Monday, July 6 — Gijón at its youngest
The future of local music will take center stage with Lia & The Wave Transfer Band, in a day dedicated to emerging talent and new proposals from the city.
Tuesday, July 7 — Igor Paskual
The musician and composer will offer a format that combines a concert, a talk, and a reflection, entitled "How to Write a Spanish Pop-Rock Song and Not Die Trying: An In-depth Look at the Craft of Songwriting."
Wednesday, July 8 — The Savoy
The evening will be dedicated to one of Gijón's most beloved live music venues. Javi y los Paramétricos will recapture its spirit, and José Fernández Riveiro's film, Savoy, 35 Years and One Night, will be screened.
Thursday, July 9 — Litus and Pablo Novoa
Two prominent figures in Spanish music will meet on stage to share songs, memories and conversation: Litus and Pablo Novoa, member of Golpes Bajos and collaborator of numerous artists.
Friday, July 10 — Jeff Espinoza and Ramón Arroyo
The week will close with an evening of roots, blues and road trip music by Jeff Espinoza and Ramón Arroyo, two musicians with decades of experience on stage.
