This mountain refuge is located in the Picos de Europa National Park, specifically in the Central Massif , on the Cantabrian side, at an altitude of 2325 meters above sea level. Although not strictly in Asturias, when undertaking expeditions and routes through the Picos de Europa, the autonomous community you're in is irrelevant, and we believe it's helpful to provide information about mountain refuges to better plan your routes . Whether you're on the Asturian or Cantabrian side of the peaks, it's useful to know that this refuge has a first-aid kit, a special stretcher for evacuating injured people, a radio belonging to Civil Protection, and a weather station from the National Parks Network.
Its strategic location on the foothills of Pico Tesorero, two hours from the upper cable car station at Fuente Dé, allows it to provide shelter and supplies to expeditions traveling between the Collado Jermoso and Urriellu mountain refuges. It has the distinction of being one of the highest staffed mountain refuges on the Iberian Peninsula.
The refuge is managed by the Cantabrian Federation of Mountain Sports and Climbing (FCDME) and is open from Easter until October . It has a capacity for 6 people in bunk beds – its size is 9 m² – and is managed by a warden who offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as soft drinks and hot beverages.
Mariano and Cabaña Veronica
In 1983, mountaineer Mariano Sánchez Madina became the warden of the refuge . He lived there year-round, selflessly maintaining it and carrying the necessary equipment to it, until he fell ill in 2007. After his death in 2008, a plaque was placed in his honor. The plaque bears this message, which he used to leave when he was away: "1983-2007. I'm carrying supplies. I'm listening with my walkie-talkie. Warden CV Mariano."

How to get to the Cabaña Verónica Refuge, the easiest route
Access to this hanging valley, overlooked by the tiny Cabaña Verónica refuge, is via the Fuente Dé cable car, which covers the 800-meter elevation gain. From here, you can embark on some of the easier high-altitude routes in the Picos de Europa.
