History

This territory was inhabited since the Paleolithic era. There are several prehistoric sites.
Some of the most interesting remains are found in Limanes and Vega de Poja. A group of four burial mounds appear in the Alto de la Mayá (Espinera) and three others in the «Cantu Negru» (Bobes).

Also the castreña culture was deeply rooted, highlighting at the present time remains of several Castros, Pico Castiello, El Castiello, La Canterona, El Cuitu, La Torre, or Les Muries.

La Roman colonization also left footprints in the municipality, such as communication routes and some significant bridges such as Colloto, Bergueres or Lugones, as well as that of Pola de Siero, destroyed around the year 1886.

In the tenth century we find the first written reference on Siero. Later, in the year 1270 the king Alfonso X El Sabio grants population letter to the men of the land of Siero.

In May 1808 Siero's intervention was decisive for the triumph of the cause of Asturias against the French.

The economic life of Siero has been presided over mainly by the cattle ranch and agriculture, a fertile territory that produced maize, beans, spelled, rye, potatoes, legumes and fruits in abundance.
Note the wide presence of flour mills, tanneries, looms, sausage factories and chocolates. In the 19th century, the discovery and exploitation of coal in its territory also contributed to the economic development of the council.

In the last decades Siero has experienced a progressive increase in its economic potential, its privileged regional position, they have made possible the improvement in the standard of living and an increase in the demand for services, with the consequent development of the tertiary sector, current development engine.
