Smoke-free beaches in Asturias

Two municipalities stand out: Castrillón and El Franco have their entire coast smoke-free , since all their beaches are within the Asturian network.

The beaches of San Lorenzo in Gijón, Torbas, Monellos, and Riboira in El Franco, and La Ñora in Villaviciosa are the latest additions to the Asturian Network of Smoke-Free Beaches . This program, run by the Regional Ministry of Health of the Principality of Asturias, now includes 27 beaches across eight municipalities. It promotes a tobacco-free lifestyle, prevents tobacco use, and fosters respect for people and the environment.

It is estimated that around seven million people die from tobacco every year in the world. These initiatives seek to sensitize the child and youth population to smoking, which is the leading cause of preventable mortality, and to inform about the harmful effects of smoke.
