At just 597 meters above sea level, the panoramic view is breathtaking. The Mirador del Fito viewpoint deserves to be called "Mirador del Fito"; it's one of those rare places that offers a spectacular 360º panorama. Within easy reach stretches kilometers of cliffs and beaches, and just as many mountains: the Sueve Nature Reserve, the Ponga Natural Park, and the Picos de Europa National Park . From east to west, we can see the towns of Ribadesella, Caravia, Colunga, and Villaviciosa (on the clearest days, you can even see Gijón). To the south lie the landscapes of Parres, Cangas de Onís, and Covadonga.
The term Fito (Fitu) may derive from hito (jito), as it is a crossroads and geographical point where several territories meet. An ancient Roman road once passed through here . The viewpoint itself is a kind of flying saucer, suspended a few meters above the ground, which appears to have deployed a ladder to reach the earth. Locals know it as the cazu, due to its cup-like shape.
It was inaugurated in 1927 with the idea of providing tourists with the best possible view without any trees obstructing the view, and its construction was a prime example of community collaboration. Numerous donations came from all over the Principality, as well as contributions of materials from several local businesses.
A true tribute to the Asturian landscape. A unique location that also serves as the starting point for numerous hiking trails leading to higher peaks and more magnificent panoramic views. However, we reached the Fito mountain range by car, and these other summits after a good hike. Such is the case with the highest point of the Sierra del Sueve: Picu Pienzu.
Starting from Fitu, we can reach this summit and return in about five hours. An unforgettable hike of low difficulty. From Fito, the route is clearly marked. The path leads us to a mountain pasture known as "El Bustacu." From this point, the walking becomes more strenuous, but nothing that can't be overcome with water in our canteens and some energy supplements. To our feet, to the north, we see La Biescona – the most important and spectacular beech forest in the Sueve mountain range , well worth a separate visit. From Pienzu, on a very clear day, you can see from Galicia to Biscay . At 1.149 meters high, it is one of the closest peaks to the sea on the planet.

How to get to Mirador del Fitu?
To get to Mirador del Fitu we must take the AS-260 road, that communicates the localities of Arriondas and Colunga. We can take it from Arriondas or from Colunga. The port of Fito is equidistant from both towns, just halfway, 11 kilometers away. This road is extremely beautiful, with a winding but well paved and safe route. It takes place every year the popular Ascent to the Fito, rally event scoring for the Spanish championship. Once up, we will find an area of parking a few meters from the viewpoint.
