Sunday market of Cangas de Onís

The market of Cangas

Today, the Cangas market resembles in more ways than one of what it was two hundred years ago. It is still held on Sundays , a working day in Cangas, perhaps the busiest day of the week. The market grounds remain the same as those depicted by Jovellanos. What was once the church field is now the church square.

The Sunday market in Cangas de Onís is the most authentic souk in the eastern region of Asturias . Jovellanos, in his Diaries, described this market on his way to Covadonga—a description we can read on one of the plaques located in the market grounds: “At the fair in the churchyard; a large crowd and much traffic in coarse goods; caps on tall poles with hooks made from the same branches on which they were hung; three hundred to three hundred and fifty will be sold; all the women buy them; coarse cloths; baize, baize, surplices, painted linens, scythes and other rustic tools; pottery, copper kitchenware; three copper silversmiths from Gijón; many open-air stalls; sieves, etc.; many people and much activity.”

Where is the market located?

In the same area around the Palaciu Pintu , near the parish church, and especially under the arcades, the Cangas market continues to be renowned for its bustling activity and large crowds. There is still a steady flow of goods, just as the enlightened Gijón native described. However, the stalls that once supplied pre-industrial households with countless everyday items have now specialized in the edible side of crafts.
