Organic farming emerged in Europe many years ago as an alternative to increasingly intensive agriculture that relied heavily on agrochemicals. In 1996, the Council for Organic Agricultural Production of the Principality of Asturias (COPAE) was created as the body responsible for the official control of organic production and for maintaining the register of operators.
