The Central Massif or Urrieles Massif of the Picos de Europa is without a doubt, it is the wildest and most spectacular.
In this massif are the highest peaks of the National Park with its roof Torrecerredo (2.650 m) and its iconic peak, Naranjo de Bulnes or Pico Urriellu.
On this trek we are going to tour the massif, following part of the Extrem Ring route, sleeping in their mythical refuges such as Collado Jermoso, Naranjo de Bulnes and Jou de Los Cabrones.

DAY 1. FROM VALCAVAO TO THE COLLADO JERMOSO REFUGE
Elevation difference: + 700 m – 400 m Distance: 8 km Time: 4-5 hours
Meeting in Cangas de Onís at 8.30:XNUMX a.m. Presentation, review of material, delivery of documentation and transfer by car to the Port of Pandetrave and then by track to Valcabao.
Today we start with a first-hand, but beautiful, route that runs from Valcabao to the Collado Jermoso Refuge along the Pedabejo Channel, passing near the spectacular Vega de Liordes and continuing along the Colladinas cliff until reaching the refuge. from Collado Jermoso, our first stop and overnight stay. We rested and looked forward to the famous sunset with wonderful views of the entire Valdeón valley and the Western Massif. Dinner and overnight at the shelter.
DAY 2 Breakfast. FROM THE COLLADO JERMOSO REFUGE TO THE URRIELLU REFUGE
Elevation difference: + 800 m – 850 m Distance: 10 km Time: 6-7 hours
Breakfast. We leave the refuge towards the Collada Ancha and Tiro Casares to reach the refuge of Verónica Cottage. From here we descend to the hill of Red Hanged Now with incredible views of the Naranjo de Bulnes and we descend towards the Jou de Los Boches along a very exposed ramp, not suitable for people with vertigo. We cross the lunar landscape of Jou de Los Boches and Jou sin Tierre until we reach the Urriellu Refuge. Dinner at the shelter and overnight.
DAY 3. FROM THE URRIELLU REFUGE TO THE CABRONES REFUGE
Elevation difference: + 700 m - 550 m Distance: 10 km Time: 5-6 hours
Breakfast. We leave the refuge, leaving behind us the west face of the emblematic Picu Urriellu to climb the Corona del Raso. Now we have a short climb up the Hunters Gap, which brings us closer to the Horcada Arenera (2.283 m), a natural passage from Urriellu to Cabrones and which separates Neverón from Urriellu and Los Albos. From here, the path runs through complicated terrain, as we will have to avoid karst holes known in Picos as Jous. We continue until we find the Cabrones shelter, in one of the wildest and most spectacular corners of the Picos de Europa. We rested a little and now we can climb to the Horcada del Agua with impressive views of the Western Massif. Dinner and overnight.
DAY 4. FROM CABRONES REFUGE TO PONCEBOS
Elevation difference: - 1.780 m Distance: 8,5 km Time: 4-5 hours
Breakfast. To finish this incredible trekking, we have a tough stage left due to the enormous descent gradient that we have to make and its technical demands. In the first part we are going to cross some aerial ledges with the help of fixed ropes in the most delicate steps until we reach the Trave Hill. From here a very steep descent towards the Amuesa sheepfold and its canal to reach the town of Bulnes. After a rest and lunch in the town, a final descent along the Canal del Tejo to Poncebos. Test passed! The trekking is done. In Poncebos the vehicle awaits us to return again to Cangas de Onís. End of services.
