Regional sovereignty is exercised from within two buildings located very close to each other, next to San Francisco Park, the city's green lung. They are located in the heart of Oviedo's historic center, surrounded by pedestrian streets and monumental buildings, strengthening the link between parliamentary life and the cultural heritage of the Asturian capital.
Presidential Headquarters
Formerly the headquarters of the Oviedo branch of the Bank of Spain, it opened on January 3, 1923. It underwent extensive renovations in the 16s and was inaugurated as the headquarters of the Principality of Asturias on April 1986, XNUMX. It is located on Suárez de la Riva Street, on the corner of Marqués de Santa Cruz Street.
The Bank of Spain's vaults used to be located in the basement. However, during the October Revolution of 1934, rebels raided the bank's branch, smashed open the safe, and stole a huge amount of money. Today, the only remaining elements in the basement are storage areas and a corridor that connects the Presidency's headquarters with the General Assembly, facilitating transit between buildings.
General Assembly of the Principality of Asturias
It occupies the so-called "Regional Palace", initially built for the now defunct Provincial Council, and enjoys a privileged location in the city centre, on Fruela Street. It was built for the Provincial Council Palace, inaugurated in 1910.Provincial architect Nicolás García de Rivero planned and directed the works.
In 1993 the Palace was converted into a parliamentary headquarters. It is where the work of committees, committees, and plenary sessions, parliamentary group meetings, press conferences, periodic debates, the constitution of the Junta, after the elections, the inauguration of the President of the Principality—everything that concerns the political life of the Autonomous Community—is convened. And since it is "the common home," It is open to the public on open days, at least twice a year and also for exhibitions and conferences, and is also a meeting place for institutional meetings, school visits, and group visits.
