It all started in 2012, when South African artist Mossel, in collaboration with the Lucas Altamira gallery, turned a dull gray staircase into a work of urban artThe name could not be any other: Stairway to Heaven, like the legendary Led Zeppelin song.
Each step represents an iconic album, inspired by Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 50 greatest albums of all time. From the provocative Never Mind the Bollocks and the Sex Pistols' Here's to the Beatles' psychedelic Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, each step is a link in a chain of legends.
The stairs quickly became an iconic and highly photographed location. They appear on social media, blogs, travel magazines, and more. They are already part of the urban imagination of GijónIt's not uncommon to see tourists stopping to capture their visit to this colorful spot, which connects the lower part of the city with the legendary Cimadevilla neighborhood.
How to get to the Rock Stairs?
They are in full swing old town of Gijón, between two streets in the historic district. The ideal option is to take a walk through Cimadevilla or the Marina.
Why visit the Rock Stairs?
- Because you love music, and here urban art pays tribute to its legends.
- Because they are a different postcard of Gijón, colorful, rebellious and cultural.
- Because they connect you with the most authentic part of the city.
