This June 6, 2026, the Navastur Cycling Club and the Cangas de Onís City Council are organizing a new Lagos de Covadonga Classic.
The Lagos de Covadonga Challenge will pay tribute in its 2026 edition to Italian cyclist Fabio Aru , winner of the Vuelta a España in 2015 and one of the most beloved cyclists of the last decade. The Italian cyclist will ride the Asturian races alongside the participants to conquer the iconic climb to the Lagos de Covadonga.
With this recognition, the cycling event wants to pay tribute to the career of a rider who left a deep mark on the international peloton and on the recent history of the Spanish tour.
The event will feature its two traditional routes , adapted to the different levels of the participants. The Gran Fondo will cover 111km, starting in Cangas de Onís and finishing at the Lakes of Covadonga . The peloton will pass through various towns in eastern Asturias, such as Arriondas, Ribadesella, Posada de Llanes, and Parres, before entering the most mountainous part of the route. The Alto de La Tornería and Alto de Riensena climbs will test the participants' legs before the most demanding challenge of the day: the legendary climb to the Lakes of Covadonga. Meanwhile, the Medio Fondo route will share the first 99km with its longer counterpart , finishing in Covadonga , at the foot of the climb to the Lakes, after the ascents of La Tornería and Riensena.
