With the special collaboration of the 13 municipalities that are part of the DOP (Grado, Salas, Tineo, Pravia, Morcin, Riosa, Soto del Barco, Cudillero, Muros de Nalón, Candamo, Las Regueras, Santo Adriano and Belmonte de Miranda) and the 7 cheese factories under the Afuegal Pitu DOP (Ca Sanchu, El Viso, La Arquera, La Borbolla, Rebollin, Temia and Tierra de Tineo).
This cheese from the year 2004 enjoys the Protected Designation of Origin.
The Afuega'l Pitu is unique, It is named in Asturian and does not support an exact translation or a clear etymology. It is made mainly with pasteurized Friesian cow's milk in the central-western area of Asturias. It is produced all year round, mainly in winter and spring.
