In Bueño, in the Asturian council of Ribera de Arriba, Culture has found a new home without abandoning its old roots. The Bueño Artistic Center was born precisely with that vocation: to demonstrate that the rural environment is not a place far removed from contemporary creation, but one of its most fertile, freest and, perhaps for that very reason, most necessary settings.
This art center is conceived as a multipurpose space intended to promote artistic and creative development in the territoryIt's not just about opening an exhibition hall, or adding a new point to the Asturian cultural map, but about creating a meeting place where artists, locals and visitors can sharing experiences related to art, innovation and social participation.
The Bueño Artistic Center It aspires to be a bridge: between Spain and Portugal, between the local and the internationalBetween the memory of a municipality with a vibrant cultural life and new forms of creation, its program brings together cultural and leisure activities, featuring national and international artists, seeking to make different artistic disciplines accessible to all audiences.
The origin of this space dates back to 2020When the EDP Foundation launched the first edition of the Public Art program, in collaboration with the Ribera de Arriba City Council, the initiative aimed to promote projects capable of promoting local development and contribute to the stabilization of the population in the council.
Among the thirty-three proposals submitted, one suggested the creation of a multipurpose cultural space in Bueño. That idea, conceived by students from the University of Zaragoza, was recognized for its innovation, creativity, and enthusiasm. The prize was awarded to Claudia Gadea Millián, Diego Catena Nieto, and Marta Molins Laín, founders of the firm MN + LM Arquitectos. Construction of the new center began in 2022.
What began as a collaboration between the EDP Foundation and the Ribera de Arriba City Council grew into a broader project. In 2023, the Embassy of Portugal in Spain and the Lisbon Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology, MAAT, joined to contribute to the artistic programming of the space. The management is the responsibility of the Ribera de Arriba Town Council.
The Bueño Artistic Center does not appear as a strange graft onto the landscape, Works by Carlos Coronas, Tadamori Yamaguchi, Cláudio Garrudo, Sandra Rocha, Sonia Navarro and Joana Vasconcelos have already passed through its rooms.
The Bueño Palace, memory and future
In the same town we find The House of Arts and SciencesLocated in an emblematic building formerly known as the Bueño Palace or Prieto Palace, it is a period Asturian manor house, later renovated, with a square floor plan, balcony with corridor, hipped roof and a large landscaped estate.
The building is linked to the Prieto family. Carlos Prieto y Fernández de la Llana, after studying Law in Oviedo, left to forge a future that would eventually take shape at the Monterrey Foundry. That 17th-century palace always maintained its connection to Asturias. The family saga continued its links to the arts through the influence of Cecile Jaqué, Prieto's wife, and was carried on by Carlos Prieto, a renowned cellist, and Carlos Miguel Prieto, an orchestra conductor. Their descendants wished for the property to be preserved as part of the municipality's heritage.
