How to get to

Via the coastal road, N-632, from Gijón, Villaviciosa, or Ribadesella. Also accessible via the Autovía del Cantábrico (Cantabrian Highway). Distances: Oviedo 68 km // Ribadesella 16 km // Gijón 44 km.

History

Decorated ceramic fragments, swords, tools, and a splendid fibula depicting an Asturcón pony have been found, attesting to human presence in these lands during the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods . The most important discovery took place in 1917: the hillfort of Pico del Castro, also known as the Caravia hillfort . Around 240 people lived there; these men belonged to the Astures and it seems likely to have been part of the Lugones subtribe. The Benedictine monastery of San Jacobo, or Santiago, was founded in Caravia in the 11th century. In the 19th century, the residents, defending their identity, opposed the dissolution of the municipality and its union with neighboring Colunga. In that same century, French troops landed on Espasa beach. Throughout the municipality, there are examples of vernacular architecture such as typical houses and granaries, as well as fine examples of medieval and Renaissance buildings.
