This maritime strip, included in the so-called Jurassic Coast of AsturiasIt also keeps an immense geological and paleontological treasure. Traces and fossils from that era abound, the findings have been archived and cataloged over the last decade and are now exhibited in the Jurassic Museum of Asturias. A building in the shape of a giant icnite located on a nearby hill from which we can see a great panoramic view of the Cantabrian Sea. Behind him stands imposing the Sierra del Sueve. The Picu Pienzu, its highest point, is more than 1.000 meters high and completes an unprecedented relief. In a few places there is such a noticeable contrast between sea level and the mountains; a perfect combination, very pleasing to the eye.

At the beach, the landscape is no less perfect. The outcrop of rocks, the mouths of certain rivers, the proximity of the slopes, the meadows, and the fact that the beaches are completely open to the sea, translates into a sensation of natural immensity.

The Jurassic beaches, as we have decided to call them here, they are perhaps the most forgotten and least visited in the eastern part of Asturias. The neighboring councils of Ribadesella, Villaviciosa or Llanes fill its beaches in the summer, while Caravia and Colunga have managed to keep an air of nostalgia and loneliness. These are sandy areas that at low tide multiply their dimensions and therefore are very difficult to fill.

It is a real privilege to enjoy the four beaches of Caravia: La Espasa, Moracey, La Beciella and Arenal de Morís. Maritime environments conducive to scuba diving, surfing, fishing and, of course, swimming. They are also ideal as wind stages for kite lovers; on more than one occasion numerous concentrations of this specialty have been held.

The beach of the Espasa puts the limit to Caravia by the West, where the beaches of Colunga. About 13 more kilometers of coastline and many and varied corners to compose a landscape of the most outstanding sailors of Asturias. Colunga is a good place to enjoy water sports. The fishing and sports port of Lastres houses the possibility of sailing, surfing or windsurfing, as well as underwater fishing in the vicinity of Cabo de Lastres. The beaches are all of fine sand. Espasa itself (in its western slope), The Island and The Greek are the most visited. That of the Island receives the name of a rock to which it is united in the low tide. It is bordered by a walk with huge eucalyptus trees that have seen a lot of time and that give an unsuspected touch to the seascape. The beach is shaped like a shell about 800 meters long. In its immediate surroundings a small urban nucleus of holiday character has proliferated, the most important of all those that accompany these solitary beaches.

Starting from La Isla we have the possibility to practice a new trekking along the cliffs until we reach the next beach: La Griega. We follow a path that runs between the 50 and 75 meters high and that clearly shows us the great environmental value of this coast. The road, which starts from the place known as "La Colonia", will lead us to the village of Huerres. From there we take a perfectly marked Small Route Route (PR). Next to the church of the town, a new path that runs through Huerres and San Juan de Duz lands begins until the end of the La Griega beach, accessible beach.

It has a delta shape and about 800 meters in length. Apart from its great beauty, La Griega is an open-air museum. In it we find tracks of dinosaurs sauropods of 125 centimeters in diameter, the largest discovered in the world so far. To see the icnitas we will not have problems, because they are perfectly signposted. At the bottom of these we discover a huge stone quarry that serves as a place of work for dozens of neighbors who practice sport fishing.

Contiguous to the Greek extends the beach of Lastres and the fishing village on it, literally hanging on the sea. This last beach is about 350 meters long and is also known as the Estilleru beach. Its proximity to the town of Lastres gives it a double attraction, because after a good swim a relaxing walk does not hurt, especially if it serves to discover one of the most beautiful villas in Asturias. From the own village of Lastres there are a lot of promontories to continue enjoying the maritime view.
