Mountain refuge located in the Picos de Europa National Park, more specifically in the Massif Central, on the side of Cantabria, and at an altitude of 2325 meters above sea level. Although it is not strictly in Asturias, when expeditions and routes through the Picos de Europa are made, it does not matter what autonomous community you are in, and we find it interesting to offer information about shelters to organize our routes with little improvisation. Whether you are on the Asturian or Cantabrian side of the peaks, it is interesting to know that this refuge has a first-aid kit, a special stretcher for the evacuation of injured people, a radio station belonging to Civil Protection and a meteorological station from the National Parks Network.
Its strategic location in the foothills of Pico Tesorero and two hours from the upper station of the Fuente Dé cable car, it allows you to provide refuge and provisioning for eventual expeditions between the Collado Jermoso and Urriellu refuges. have the honor of being one of the highest refuges in the Iberian Peninsula.
The refuge is managed by the Cantabrian Federation of Mountain and Climbing Sports (FCDME) and is open from Easter to October. It has a capacity for 6 places in bunk beds - its size is 9 m2 - and it is managed by a guard offering: breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as soft drinks and hot drinks.
Mariano and Cabaña Veronica
In the year 1983 the mountaineer Mariano Sánchez Madina becomes the guard of the refuge. He lived there all year round, selflessly maintaining it and carrying the necessary materials to him until he fell ill in 2007. After his death in 2008, a plaque was placed in tribute to all his work. On the plaque is this message that he used to leave when he was away: “1983-2007. I am carrying. I go with the talki listening. The Guardian CV Mariano».
