The organic and artisan market is a shopping alternative away from the classic commercial circuits and large stores. Here we will find the stamp of the genuine without intermediaries and in an almost festive atmosphere. A few dozen street vendors, who come from all over Asturias, carry the purest gastronomy and crafts of the Principality as a flag and combine it with different fun and educational activities at street level.

The market is held in the city's Plaza Mayor every second weekend of the month, Saturdays and Sundays, and offers a diverse assortment of goods: cured meats, spelt bread, organic cheeses, fruits and vegetables from a chemical-free garden, natural yogurt, jet jewelry, puppets, preserves, liqueurs, restored furniture, natural cosmetics, textiles, and much more. These are artisanal and/or organic products, perfect for healthy eating or as an original gift, all handcrafted with the care and expertise of Asturian artisans. They imbue each piece with its own artistic and/or culinary value, respecting the environment and the principles of organic farming. Visiting the market is a chance to experience firsthand these trends in organic products and the region's traditional artisanal methods. It also represents a way to consume healthily and with solidarity towards nature, and even towards developing countries through a small selection of fair trade products.

This market is also a great way to enjoy time as a family, as children often have access to various workshops where they learn the value of things made with their own hands. To ensure effective learning, the workshops are organized by age group. The topics range from clay modeling to crafting artisanal pieces using wood, tempera paints, or cardboard, and include workshops on recycling, organic farming, and more.

Another reason to visit this market is its location, at the foot of the Cimadevilla neighborhood , a former fishing district, where cider houses, traditional Asturian bars, and restaurants abound. Just a short walk away are San Lorenzo Beach and the marina, making it an ideal starting point for exploring the city.

For some time now, the MAE (Artisan and Organic Market) has not only been held in Gijón; there are also dates throughout the year to enjoy it in Oviedo, Avilés, and Cangas de Onís. Here's a link to all the annual events.
